Did you know that almost every product that you come into contact with – from cosmetics to household products, to medical drugs, have all been tested on animals first? And did you also know that these tests are inconclusive because animals have different DNA structures to humans

Well then why are companies still practicing impossibly cruel tests on animals?

The answer is that nobody stops them, until now. As a consumer you are singularly the biggest influence on the decisions that these companies make. If you stand up and refuse to purchase any product or drug that has come at the expense of cruelty and murder, then you will change the entire industry.

Below is a list of Companies that test on Animals, please also download a copy so you can have it handy and share it with friends

NOTE: this is an incomplete list, there are in reality thousands of companies who do testing on animals, unfortunately we do not have an accurate list for South African companies, we have highlighted the more well known brands

Our world will shortly not be able to feed itself, there is disease and environmental destruction everywhere. This is all caused by human consumption. One of the biggest is the Meat & Dairy industry, luckily this is one area where you in your own life can truly impact it

:: TAKE THE PETA PLEDGE TO BECOME VEGAN IN 2011 ::

___________________________________________________________________________________

WHAT IS VEGAN OR VEGETARIAN?

A vegan diet consumes no animal products whatsoever, this includes butter, cheese, milk, eggs and of course meat and poultry. This diet can be quite restrictive as a lot of food items contain dairy like pasta sources, ice-cream etc. However, a vegan diet is a natural one in terms of early human development (mankind didn’t start eating meat until tools and fire was discovered). As well as being extremely healthy, vegan’s are truly committed to protecting our wildlife from cruelty.

A vegetarian diet does include dairy products but no meat or poultry, For many this diet is a lot easier to follow, although many vegetarians naturally gravitate towards a more vegan diet over time (you’ll be amazed at how much you dislike animal products after not eating them for a while)

DO VEGANS / VEGETARIANS GET ENOUGH PROTEIN?

It is very easy for a vegan diet to meet the recommendations for protein as long as calorie intake is adequate. Strict protein planning or combining is not necessary. The key is to eat a varied diet.

Almost all foods except for alcohol, sugar, and fats provide some protein. Vegan sources include: lentils, chickpeas, tofu, peas, peanut butter, soy milk, almonds, spinach, rice, whole wheat bread, potatoes, broccoli, kale… For example, if part of a day’s menu included the following foods, you would meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein for an adult male:

1 cup oatmeal, 1 cup soy milk

2 slices whole wheat bread, 1 bagel

2 Tablespoons peanut butter

1 cup vegetarian baked beans

5 ounces tofu, 2 Tablespoons of almonds

1 cup broccoli, and 1 cup brown rice.

WHAT WOULD I EAT IF I BECAME VEGAN?

Many people think their diet would be boring and unappetising if they were to become vegan… think again:

Oatmeal, stir-fried vegetables, cereal, toast, orange juice, peanut butter on whole wheat bread, frozen fruit desserts, lentil soup, salad bar items like chickpeas and three bean salad, dates, apples, macaroni, fruit smoothies, popcorn, spaghetti, vegetarian baked beans, guacamole, chili, Tofu lasagna, homemade pancakes without eggs, hummus, eggless cookies, soy ice cream, tempeh, corn chowder, soy yogurt, rice pudding, fava beans, banana muffins, spinach pies, oat nut burgers, falafel, corn fritters, French toast made with soy milk, soy hot dogs, vegetable burgers, pumpkin casserole, scrambled tofu…

I’M TOO AFRAID TO WATCH THE PETA VIDEOS – BUT TELL ME SOME FACTS

56 Million – the amount of chickens slaughtered every day between America and the UK (think of China, India, South America…)

1.5 Million – he amount of cows slaughtered every day between America and the UK (excluding the rest of the world)

Male Chicks are ground up alive, electrocuted, or thrown into trash cans where they slowly suffocate on top of one another (in egg producing farms)

Male calves are taken from their mother’s immediately after birth, chained to a stake to keep their muscles soft then killed after 30 days (in milk producing farms)

Meat cows consume more grain than humans, if the world became vegetarian there would be no hunger

And by now you should all know how chickens, pigs and cows are kept in confinement, abused (sexually and physically) and inhumanely slaughtered so we don’t need to mention that

START SLOW

If you feel this industry needs to change but you don’t think you can commit to a full vegetarian or vegan diet immediately, start slow by doing these things. Your body and the planet will love you for it:

Try cut out 1 or 2 types of meat or fish (like veal and over-fished fish)

If you do buy meat, chicken or eggs, only buy certified free-range

Encourage your family to have one meat-free day a week

There are thousands of vegetarian or vegan diets available on the internet – try some

Donate some money monthly to animal welfare organisations that are striving to transform this awful industry

No matter what role you play in the seafood supply chain, you can make a difference! From the fishermen out on the water right through to consumers buying seafood in their local restaurants and retailers, we can all play our part and get involved in creating a sustainable seafood industry

____________________________________________________________________________

IF YOU ARE A CONSUMER:

With so many different seafood options available in restaurants and supermarkets, how can you ensure you make the best choice for you and for the environment? BUT by asking the right questions, and knowing what to look for and what to avoid, you can better choose seafood that is good for you and good for the environment!

We have taken a fairly simple, yet effective, approach. It is similar to a traffic light system

When the species is listed as green, go for it! (view the list)

When it is orange, think twice about it! (view the list)

And red, well that is a definite no-no! (view the list)

The SASSI seafood database
With well over a hundred species assessed, using an internationally accepted best practise methodology which captures information about the biology, the impacts of the fishing methods used and the management of the fishery, the SASSI seafood database contains all of the information you need to know about the species under assessment

____________________________________________________________________________

IF YOU OWN A RESTAURANT OR HOTEL:

Sustainable seafood is more than just a good deal for our marine ecosystems, it makes business sense too. SASSI is committed to working hand-in-hand with the seafood industry towards a future in which sustainable fisheries and aquaculture thrive at a level that supports the communities and businesses that depend on them.

Supporting SASSI and our vision for a sustainable seafood industry means purchasing environmentally responsible seafood by following our best practice guidelines for sustainable seafood. This in turn supports responsible fisheries and the many communities which rely on healthy ecosystems to provide them with livelihoods. Not only does this help to reduce the pressure on our threatened marine resources, but with an increasingly environmentally-aware market, it could mean a world of difference to your company´s bottom line.

Globally, as people have become sensitised to the environmental issues around seafood, businesses involved in the seafood industry have come under increasing pressure to ensure the sustainability of their operations, not just out at sea but in factories, retail outlets and restaurants. In order to be granted their “license to operate” by the public, seafood businesses now need to take a proactive stance on sustainability, not just to ensure the survival of our marine ecosystems, but also their own.

SASSI currently runs participation schemes for both restaurants as well as retailers/suppliers with a view to enabling these businesses to take advantage of the benefits offered by sustainable seafood. These schemes were developed to empower businesses in the seafood industry to implement best practice principles into their business operations and proactively respond to society´s demand for sustainable and responsibly-sourced seafood products.

As part of their commitment to sustainability, all SASSI participants commit to the conducting their businesses according to the principles of the SASSI Charter, these are:

Ensuring that all seafood on offer is legal and not on the SASSI Red list

Phasing out unsustainable seafood products and replacing them with sustainable substitutes

Promoting sustainable choices from responsible, well managed fisheries

Continuously evaluating their seafood product range against strict legal, traceability, and sustainability criteria

Providing their consumers with seafood that is adequately labeled and includes information on the species, origin, and production method (fishing gear used, or wild-caught/farmed), or any credible eco-labels that may apply

Always endeavouring to offer seafood that is traceable to its origins, making use of suitable traceability schemes or mechanisms

Find out more about SASSI´s retailer/supplier participation scheme or SASSI´s restaurant participation scheme

____________________________________________________________________________

IF YOU OWN A FISHERIES:

SASSI´s goal is ultimately to implement positive changes on the water which can help to improve the sustainability of our fishing industry. In order to achieve these changes, WWF is working with the industry to develop a number of Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIPs)

A Fisheries Improvement Project is a project which has been developed to address important sustainability concerns around a fishery. These could include bycatch mitigation measures, spatial management plans, gear modifications and any number of other issues. The objectives of these projects is to improve the sustainability of the fishery and in so doing, shift all of our fisheries towards Green-list status.

Fisheries which currently have active Fishery Improvement Projects are also highlighted on the SASSI wallet card by placing the FIP icon next to the species targetted by the FIP: Kingklip and Monk, Sardine and Anchovy, Sole and Kob

Attend training: Fisheries managers, crew, skippers and compliance officers can attend the Responsible Fisheries training run by WWF Sustainable Fisheries Program, to learn how to fish more efficiently and decrease their impacts on our marine ecosystems.

Fish smarter: WWF and partners created the International Smart Gear Competition to inspire innovative, practical, cost effective ideas that allow fishers to fish smarter. The competition is open to everyone.

Start a Fishery Improvement Project: Through the SASSI listing process some fisheries have proactively identified areas where they can improve so as to address the key environmental challenges facing the particular fishery

When hurricane Hannah separated two white tigers from their mother, Anjana came to the Rescue. Anjana is a chimp who became a surrogate mom and playmate to the cubs, even helping with bottle feeding, according to The Sun. But here’s the truly amazing part: this is something Anjana does all the time, having helped raised leopard and lion cubs on several occasions

STOP-THE-AFRICAN-SEAL-HUNT IN NAMIBIA: Along the oldest desert coastline in the world and the least populated country on earth has raged a non-traditional foreign inspired slaughter which has become known as the ‘Last Baby Seal Hunt on Earth’

It has been this way since 1940. So cruel and against the laws of nature and every known modern method of harvesting of a living wild animal

SIGN THE PETITION HERE / WWW.FURFREE.CO.ZA

That it was banned in the USA in 1972 and the EU in 1983 and stopped by all the world’s remaining sealing countries of Canada, Greenland, Norway or Russia in 1987. The United Nations Environmental Protection agency through its United Nations Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) arm has controlled its 100\% exported trade since 1977 in South Africa and since 1991 in Namibia – Cape fur seal pups still remains the only Appendix II protected species to be exported and imported legally around the world.

Found nowhere else on earth, except along the coastline of southern Africa. Although commercial sealing of this species in its living breeding natural habitat – islands, has between 1486 and 1900, already driven this species close to extinction – and 98\% of its former breeding, birthing and nursing habitat remains extinct. South Africa only stopped its sealing practice in 1990.

Namibia now remains the only country on earth to round up nursing baby seals still suckling on their mother’s milk, driving them in-land away from the safety of the sea, and as they attempt to flee alongside their mothers back to its safety are clubbed and stabbed to death by rows of as many as 100 part-time migrant workers – everyday between July 1 and November 15, each year. Vomiting up their mother’s milk as they slowly die. On just two mainland seal colonies where 75\% of this species unnaturally remains. Where the Namibian government grants 3 sealing concession holders the right to club these protected wildlife seals to death.

Once totaling over 16 million or 3\% of the world’s current cat and dog populations. The Cape fur seals are today 5 – 10\% of their former population. Each year between 50 – 100\% of its new-born are rounded up as they reach the age of 7-months and 15 kg’s in weight and are clubbed to death viciously until dead. Millions upon millions have been slaughtered, not in this traditional age-old method, not by out of work fishermen, but in a method adapted from foreigners, who ventured to these shores not so long ago.

This region was once the most productive fisheries in the world. Within a decade the commercial harvest of fish species dropped from 1.387 million tons to 45 000 tons or 3\%. With it caused the start of mass abortions and starvation of this species of seal – where in 1988, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2001 – saw between one third to one half of this species starve to death each year.

The pelts of these baby fur seals is the most prized product of this species, its average traded international price is less than one USD dollar. Described also as the cruellest seal hunt on earth, it is also the most wasteful with 63\% of the weight of these pups and 75\% of the weight of these bulls, shot mainly for their genitals for the far east trade, is discarded – unless sold as cheap fish-meal to the livestock or pet-food industries at .30 cents a kg.

Although this species has declined over 50\% in the last decade and whose population is today lower than it was in 1982. The Namibian 2006 Sealing quota of 85 000 pups and 5000 bulls, the largest on record. Will see a total baby seal pup genocide of this species this year.

By adding your signature to this petition, you are voicing your international right to a protected marine environment and in so doing are asking Francois Hugo of Seal Alert-SA to do whatever is legally required to – Stop-The-African-Seal-Hunt

Owning a pet carries a lot of responsibility. Pet owners need to realize that pets need preventive care almost in the same way that a child would need. Your furry loved ones depend on you so educate yourself on proper care

Pet Obesity:

Some pets are prone to obesity. Wrong diet and genetics are two major reasons for obesity. Often it is hard for us to perceive when our pets are clinically or morbidly obese. It is just as much of a problem to animals as it is to human beings. In the wild, obesity in animals is less prevalent but it still exists. Pets however, have a track record of high rates of obesity and it is estimated that over 25% of pets are clinically obese or overweight. Studies have proven that as pet owners we are more likely to give too much to our pets and let them reach obesity. Obesity can be recognised by a series of observations, starting with the ribs. In a healthy dog, the ribs are not visible, but they can be felt easily without pressing on the ribcage. The stomach should feel tight and tucked in. If your animal passes these two quick tests, then chances are they are not obese. However, if they have huge amounts of fat at their ribs, and their stomach hangs out like a beer gut, then you have an obese animal.

Speak to your vet immediately about dietary options, an obese animal is not a happy animal and their lifespan will be seriously reduced

Poisonous Foods:

Ok sometimes we cheat and we feed our pets off our dinner plate not knowing that a lot of human food is not only harmful but poisonous to them

Grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, mushrooms, green tomatoes

Coffee, tea, soft drinks, sodas, chocolate, hot chocolate

Macadamia nuts, rhubarb leaves, persimmons, nutmeg

Sugar and Chemical based sweetners

Yeast, Beer and other alcoholic drinks

Human vitamins and joint supplements

Human medication especially Paracetamol and Ibuprofen

Cooked bones of any sort as they splinter and damage your pets gastro intestinal system, bowels, intestines, stomach, esophagus and rectal tissue

Pet Nutrition:

Pet foods must have some type of nutritional supplements, such as vitamins and minerals. If pets have too much, then it may cause a problem with the minerals absorbing. In contrast, too little minerals may cause the interruption of vitamin and/or mineral usage. There are different types of pet foods in which pet owners can choose from: kibble and semi-moist foods.

Kibble: This is basically the dry food that many of our pets love. For those owners that are curious what is in kibble foods, it contains liquid fat carbohydrate, and/or milk product. This adds the calories. This type of food must be packaged with a barrier that contains grease, which is made from plastic-coated paper.

Semi-moist foods: This is the food that is wrapped up in individual bags, which resembles stringy spaghetti. The preparation consists of combination’s of sugar, soybean meal, fresh meat, animal fat, preservatives and the wetting materials that keeps this food moist and not be rancid.

Pet Health:

No matter what kind of pet you have, there are three essentials to good health for your pet. Here is an overview of those three essentials:

Food and Water: Every pet, no matter how independent, needs a steady supply of food and water to keep it healthy. Pets often can tell you when they are hungry or thirsty and they will often even look through your kitchen for food to eat in the event that you neglect their regular feeding habits for too long. However, many pets rely on you to ensure that they maintain a regular meal regimen

Shelter: No matter the type of pet you have, they all require proper shelter, this means warmth, protection from the elements and harm from other animals. Ensure you have a warm, dry and safe area for your pets that they can access at all times. Never discipline your pets in this area it is their safe zone and must be respected at all times.

Medical Care:

Your pet will require medical care sooner or later. Seeing that your pet obtains the proper medical attention can not only keep him or her in good health, but it can also ensure that they do not fall terribly ill in the case that their health deteriorates.

Veterinary Care: is an ongoing expense for people who have pets. Young animals and old need vaccinations, preventative care against parasitic infections, as well as care for accidental injury, poisoning, or illness. As veterinary care has become more specialized and technology has advanced treatment options, the costs of pet ownership can at times seem well out of hand. Veterinary insurance can help to offset those major expenses and help our pets to live long healthy lives.

Did you know if nothing is done cheetahs will be extinct in 10 years?

Cheetahs suffer from a lack of genetic diversity making them more susceptible to disease and decreasing reproduction. Also, a decline in prey, loss of habitat, poaching, and indiscriminate trapping and shooting as a livestock predator threaten the survival of the Cheetah. Cheetahs do not pose a threat to human life. When encountered on foot, a cheetah will look long and hard in your direction and then move off at great speed. They can, however, be aggressive under captive conditions and it is always advisable to handle them with care. A whack in the face with those long claws will not easily be forgotten. Endangered species exist in low-population numbers and need intensive long-term management in order to survive.

Help protect its habitat and ensure a place for it on Namibian farmlands

Aid in the conservation of the wild prey base

Halt the indiscriminate capture and removal of the cheetah

Improve livestock management

Educate everyone about the need to conserve biological diversity, and the predators’ unique role in a healthy ecosystem.
