Formed in 1995 and officially launched in April 1997, the Timberwatch Coalition is a voluntary alliance of South African non-governmental organisations and individuals that are concerned about the negative impacts of industrial tree plantations on people and the environment. The Constitution adopted by Timberwatch in 2004 can be seen HERE

Timberwatch’s management committee consists of individuals and representatives of NGO members that are elected at an annual general meeting. We co-operates with overseas organisations with aims similar to ours, such as the World Rainforest Movement (WRM), Friends of the Earth international (FOEI), and the Global Forest Coalition (GFC).

OUR VISION

For industrial tree plantations (ITPs) in southern Africa to be allowed only where they do not damage rural people’s livelihoods and the natural environment. Timberwatch has called for a moratorium on the South African government allowing new ITP’s to be established on land that is naturally vegetated, or on productive agricultural land

WE NEED

Resources are required for volunteer activities which include monitoring plantations and pulp mills, and workshops to raise awareness – funding for transport, admin support, workshop costs, educational materials, etc.
