Did you know that we were the first country to regulate the production and usage of plastic shopping bags? A great start but while some people are shopping with re-usable canvas bags, the majority would still pay a few cents for the convenience of not having to remember to bring the canvas ones
There are an estimated 8 billion plastic bags in SA alone with incredibly wide ranging effects from mass scale pollution of our rivers, seas and land, to the killing of animal, fish and bird life. The plastic industry is of course battling the global trend to reduce consumption of shopping bags – why wouldn’t they?
- There are many solutions to restructure their income models by looking more closely at recycling, but that is for them to decide whether they have the vision or not.
- What we can do is remember the power of supply and demand – in our case we need to show industry that our demand is not plastic bags so that it becomes an obsolete market. Only by large shifts in choices can we sway this market.
- Yes there A LOT of ills to right in our world but such a simple choice of switching to canvas from plastic should be a no-brainer. Here are some points to sway your mind;
- You have to pay for Plastic Bags over and over again – your canvas bag is purchased once and never again
- And that’s the only argument we have. If you were concerned about the effect of pollution and animal welfare you would already have stopped contributing towards the damage
